New CCTV has been welcomed in an Ipswich street in a bid to tackle crime in the area, following increased reports of drug dealing and theft.

The temporary, four-way CCTV system was installed on a lamppost in Waterloo Road, off Chevallier Street, on Wednesday, February 7.

The new cameras were approved to help monitor the area for a period of one year, according to Suffolk County Council.

Ipswich Borough Council was granted permission by the county council for the installation following consultations with Suffolk police, councillors and the neighbourhood watch group.

Waterloo Road resident and councillor Ruman Muhith said the creation of the watch area and the CCTV has "significantly enhanced the sense of safety" in the neighbourhood, and would deter wrongdoing.

Last year, neighbours in the community set up a Whatsapp group and established a watch area after they said they felt "unsafe and uneasy" in their homes.

The area is just off Norwich Road, including Brooks Hall Road, Blenheim Road, and the All Saints Church end of Waterloo Road.

Mr Muhith added: "Studies in criminology consistently demonstrate the efficacy of CCTV in deterring criminal activities and providing crucial evidence for law enforcement.

"With surveillance cameras in place, our community feels reassured and empowered, knowing that potential wrongdoers are less likely to engage in illicit behaviour.

"The collaborative effort between Ipswich Borough Council, Suffolk Police, and Suffolk County Council reflects a proactive approach to addressing community safety concerns, and our Neighbourhood Watch members and I extend our gratitude for their responsiveness to our Neighbourhood Watch Area.

"I personally want to extend my appreciation to the members of our Neighbourhood Watch Area whose dedication and vigilance have been instrumental in making the installation of CCTV a reality.

"Their support and determination underscores the importance of community engagement in promoting safer neighbourhoods.

"Our Neighbourhood Watch Area advocates for community-based initiatives, and we urge other neighbourhoods to establish Neighbourhood Watch Areas, as they have proven to be effective in fostering a sense of security and collective responsibility in crime prevention.

"Together, we can create safer streets for all residents in and around Ipswich."
