Robin Windsor: Ipswich pays tribute to late Strictly dancer

Tributes poured in yesterday in memory of Robin Windsor who grew up in the Spring Road area and attended Copleston High School.

The 44-year-old featured on the hit BBC show from 2010 to 2013, with partners including Lisa Riley, Patsy Kensit and Anita Dobson. 

But beyond flamboyant performances of a “Car Wash” samba and “Making your mind up” jive, Windsor was a pillar of the national and local dance community, sharing his passion with others.

Sarah Wagstaff-Till, who knew Windsor for many years and worked with him at the National Association of Teachers of Dancing (NADT) where he was a patron, said: “He was vivacious. He really did light up the room. But at the same time, he was so incredibly humble. 

“He was so down-to-earth and he really cared about everyone. He was such a genuine guy. He came with no ego.”

Helen Jessop, Anglian area chairperson of the NADT, taught Windsor to dance as a young boy and worked with him for decades after. 

She, too, remembers Windsor as a genuine and kind person. She said: “Even though he had all the fame, he always remembered where he started. 

“He was a global superstar, but he still had time for those raw beginners, those children who had never done a step in their lives.” 

The NADT said of their former patron: “He was a true dance icon whose passion and talent illuminated our world. His graceful moves and warm spirit will forever resonate in the hearts of those who had the privilege to witness his artistry.”

Windsor returned to his secondary school, Copleston High School, in 2015 to judge a children’s dance competition. 

One parent remembered: “Robin was generous, kind and thoughtful. Always thought of others and was so incredibly courteous to all the children at this competition, giving guidance on subtle improvements and wonderful feedback on all their performances.” 

Andy Green, the head of the school, said: “Our whole school community is deeply saddened by Robin Windsor’s death, someone who was such a great role model for our students. We were proud to have him as an alumni.” 

As well as his work as a patron and dance teacher, Windsor appeared in many theatre productions after his departure from Strictly, with his death prompting an outpouring of grief from the drama community. 

Just two months ago, the star played the Genie in Aladdin at the Marina Theatre in Lowestoft.

Georgia Melton, who performed with Windsor during the 2023 pantomime, said: “I learnt so much from dancing with Robin. His strength and presence filled me with confidence and he led me in a way which made me feel so safe. I had the privilege of dancing with someone who embodied the magic of performing and had such a deep passion for what he did.  

“Growing up as a dancer in Ipswich, I always looked up to Robin, especially as he was a local boy.” 

The Marina Theatre, too, paid tribute to Windsor: “Robin was a beautiful, kind and gentle soul who made an effort to get to know all of our team. A very talented gem indeed and our hearts are broken.” 

Despite becoming a household name, Windsor never lost sight of his hometown of Ipswich. 

After receiving an honorary degree from the University of Suffolk in 2017, Windsor said: “I do what I love every day and to be recognised for that is absolutely amazing. Coming from Suffolk, being awarded this from the University of Suffolk is obviously very special.” 

A University of Suffolk spokesperson said: “He was an incredibly popular figure here in Suffolk, bringing a great deal of joy to many people through his wonderful dancing, and will be missed a great deal.” 

Members of his Strictly family and the wider entertainment world also expressed their sadness at his death.

Lisa Riley, who reached the semi-finals of Strictly Come Dancing with Windsor in 2012, said: “My Bestie, My Robin, My Angel … now our forever Angel, who is loved, will always be loved, forever in my heart … my very broken heart, I love you, shine your beautiful, electric energy from heaven. SHINE IN PEACE.” 

Former Strictly Come Dancing professional James Jordan also paid tribute, saying: “Robin was always very caring and fun to be around. Everyone who came in contact with him adored him. You will be missed old friend.”

And Sico Entertainment Group, behind the upcoming production Come What May which was due to star Windsor, said: “Robin’s presence in ‘Come What May’ was more than just a performance; it was an embodiment of passion, grace and sheer talent. 

“Beyond his impeccable dancing, Robin’s vibrant spirit lit up the room, infusing rehearsals and performances with infectious energy and warmth.”
