A female sparrowhawk was rescued from a warehouse in Ipswich after being trapped inside for more than a week.

Suffolk Owl Sanctuary found the bird at a warehouse in Ransomes Industrial Estate after she was spooked by people coming inside.

"She was too far up for us to safely reach," said Dolly Cook, of the non-profit organisation.

"I left food out to try and encourage her to fly down but she stayed out of reach."

After eight days, workers at the warehouse were able to capture the bird for further assessment.

"Upon arrival, she was understandably very thin, but our team discovered that she was also likely suffering from avian pox," said Ms Cook.

Avian pox is a virus commonly seen in garden birds which are the main prey of sparrowhawks.

The virus is not fatal but the growths can prevent birds from feeding.

"She is recovering really well," said Ms Cook. "We are hopeful she will make a full recovery and then we can release her back into the wild close to where we found her."
