Residents at an Ipswich block of flats say they are having to clean daily and have developed respiratory issues as a result of mould issues.

Several residents living at Broad Oak Flats in Burlington Road, Ipswich, have said that they have had to throw out clothes and furniture due to the impact of mould in their flats.

Orwell Housing Association, who own the flats, have said they have received three formal complaints from those living there, and while they have undergone mould cleaning and initial inspections, they plan to widen the inspection to include all the flats in the building.

Yasmin Beeston, Chelsea Edwards, Daniella Boon and Kevin Morris all live in the building and shared their concerns.

Yasmin said: "I've been here for four years and it's been mouldy since I moved in.

"Chelsea, my flatmate, she's been here nine years and it's been mouldy since then.

"It's affected people's chests, a lot of the children in the building are constantly ill, our clothes get constantly mouldy, I've got a chest of drawers waiting to go out because it's destroyed.

"We've reported it continuously, but we keep being told it's surface condensation, and we can clearly see it isn't.

"Kids have severe asthma from it now. We're just never getting a break from it now."

Steven Crissall, assistant director of property services at Orwell Housing Association, said: "We are aware of these concerns and are working closely with our customers to promptly address them.

"Our top priority is ensuring that all our customers have a safe and healthy living environment, and we strive to resolve any concerns as swiftly as possible.

"We understand that issues such as damp, and mould, while quite rare, can be distressing for our customers, and we want to provide reassurance that we take them seriously.

"We have carried out mould cleaning and some initial inspections of the flats and, as the issue is ongoing, we plan to widen this inspection to include all the flats within the building, even those who haven’t reported having mould, to further aid us in finding and resolving the root cause.

"We note that we have three formal complaints logged from customers living there and we are in the process of responding.

"If anyone else has any concerns, we would encourage them to do the same."

"This allows us to formally address any issues and, if there are areas for improvement, we can pinpoint those and make the necessary changes."

Another resident, Kevin Morris, added: "I fully decorated my flat, had brand new carpets and furniture fitted.

"The wardrobe has now got mould at the bottom of it.

"It's becoming a daily thing to have to grab some mould cleaning solution and go around spraying it in infected areas, and they have sent people out to do it, but they use the same solution that I use, and the problem keeps coming back.

"I've had a chest x-ray, and thankfully nothing has come up yet, however, the doctors have put me on an inhaler.

"My partner and I get really tired really early, because it takes a lot out of you constantly having to clean the mould every day.

"I work five days a week and my partner works six, we come home, and have to clean it again, and you don't want to be doing that when you're over 60."

A Whatsapp group between residents have indicated that around 10 flats are known to be affected by the issue, impacting around 40 people in total.
