Work has started on the construction of 30 affordable council flats on the site of the former Orwell Centre in Fore Hamlet in Ipswich.

The new site will be called the Orwell Centre and will be built on the former grounds of Hope Church, showcasing 30 flats with shared gardens.

The development will be conducted by Handford Homes, Ipswich Borough Council's development wing, and SEH French Construction, as they emphasise their commitment towards sustainable housing in the town.

The plans were given the green light by the council in October 2022 and they are expected to be open by autumn 2025.

The site was always owned by the borough council as the church rented the building from the authority on a long lease before its move to the former Odeon Cinema near the town centre.

Planning documents previously said the flats will be a mixture of one and two bedroomed apartments.

All will either be adapted for wheelchair users – or will be easily adaptable if needed.

Colin Kreidewolf, chair of Handford Homes, said: "Our forward-thinking housing program delivers exceptional, affordably priced homes, incorporating shared green spaces, ample parking, and prime access to Ipswich's Waterfront and town centre.

"This project aligns with Ipswich Borough Council's vision of furnishing the community with energy-efficient, high-quality housing."

The work for the start of the development was commenced on Thursday, with the constructors aiming to create a community in the area with energy-efficient housing.

A ceremonial groundbreaking event was held to mark the occasion.

Simon Girling, director at SEH French Construction, said: "Affordable homes are an essential part of every community and we are thrilled to be working with Handford Homes on this project.

"We share their commitment to providing high-quality places for people to live which enhances the living standard in Ipswich.”
