Plans have been submitted to change the use of a building formerly used as a health club, as well as extending the property, to allow for 16 homes.

Ipswich Borough Council has received plans to convert the old Gym and Trim Health Club in Lower Orwell Street into 16 properties.

The plans will involve conversion and extension of the building, with all homes providing two bedrooms.

The development will involve building a side extension and a new floor, which will be provided with a shallow-pitch butterfly roof.

The plans state that the application represents an "underutilised brownfield site within the IP1 area of Ipswich and its town centre".

It also states that the development will provide high-quality residential development and will bring economic gains through job creation.

The development will also include a secure cycle parking, enough for 16 bikes, while car parking will also be created – with 17 spaces provided, one for each flat and one for delivery vehicles.

Ipswich Borough Council is to discuss the plans in due course.
