An Ipswich student and friend has spoken of the need for greater mental health support in the county, calling out for support for her friend.

Samantha Louise Kershaw, a student of psychology and counselling, says what she is taught at university is not being implemented in wider practice.

Ms Kershaw said: “I am ashamed of how mental heath is getting dealt with in the town. My friend's case is not the only I know. We need greater support in this county.

"The most recent incident was a few weeks ago. I had to look after her and wait until an ambulance could arrive, which took three hours.

"We see it all the time. People are suffering and I am simply upset that nothing seems to be done to improve mental health.

"She needs a diagnosis to see what is going on. There are many others who need help."

An spokesperson from Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust (NSFT), which provides services for adults and children with mental health needs in the county, said: “We are sorry to hear of examples of people who have not received the care they feel they should have.

“NSFT is on a rapid journey of improvement which has recently been strengthened by the arrival of our new Chief Executive Caroline Donovan.

"Caroline has a proven track record for transforming mental health service provision and has made improving the quality of care we provide a number one priority.

“We are working alongside partners to further improve the services available to people who are experiencing mental health crisis, which includes investing in additional inpatient beds.

"Details of the full range of support we offer is available on our website, and includes Steam House cafes where fully trained staff offer holistic support day and night.

“We are unable to discuss this individual case due to patient confidentiality, but would invite the person to speak to our customer service team if they are unhappy with the services they have received.”

People in crisis can also call 111 and select the mental health option at any time to receive appropriate care and advice.
