Plans to rebuild a health spa on the outskirts of Ipswich after it was destroyed following a huge fire last summer have been given the go ahead.

Bosses at Riverhills Health Club and Spa in Clarice House in Bramford submitted plans to Mid Suffolk District Council in January after part of it burned to the ground following a devastating fire last June.

The fire, which started in the swimming pool area of the spa, broke late one night and saw more than 17 crews attend the blaze, who were able to prevent the fire from spreading to the main part of the building.

The proposal which was submitted earlier this year said the facility would be rebuilt in a "like for like" manner with "minor enhancement" that will collectively modest in nature.

There was also plans to add a hydrotherapy pool area and spinning studio for classes in body conditioning, pilates, circuit training, and yoga.

According to the design and access statement submitted with the application the fire had a significant impact to the business, staff and wider community.

The application stated that the new building will be built with class A fire rated materials – such as brickwork and cementitious cladding.

Earlier this month, work started on a £240,000 scheme to refurbish six of the venue's treatment rooms and the building of a new luxurious lounge

Speaking previously about the project, owner Dave Courteen said: “With work already underway to rebuild our pool area following the fire last year, we’ve made the best of what has been a difficult situation by taking the opportunity to bring forward the next phase of our planned refurbishment.

“Our new-look treatment rooms will bring the spa in line with the modern upgrades we’ve already made across the club as well as complementing our new pool area which we hope to reopen at the end of this year."
