An Ipswich woman has been convicted of failing to buy a train ticket in Greater Manchester last summer.

Katy Wood, 29, of Upper High Street in the Suffolk town, travelled from East Disbury to Manchester Piccadilly on July 31 last year without a valid ticket.

The Northern Trains journey, which took just 12 minutes, has now cost her more than £450.

Wood was charged with failing to produce or deliver a valid rail ticket on request.

Manchester Magistrates’ Court heard that Wood had not paid the penalty fare notice of £100 plus the £4.30 single fare, nor had she responded to a reminder letter.

Wood's case was dealt with through the single justice procedure, which deals with more minor offences that are not heard before a crown court.

The defendant has been told to pay out a total of £462.30.

This includes a £220 fine, a victim surcharge of £88, prosecution costs of £150 and the £4.30 ticket cost.
