A man in his 50s has died after a tanker overturned on the A12 in the early hours of this morning.

Emergency services were called to the incident near Copdock Interchange at 4.30am following reports that a fuel tanker travelling northbound had overturned on the slip road to the roundabout.

Police, Suffolk Fire and Rescue, Highways England, National Highways, the Environment Agency and the East of England Ambulance Service attended the incident.

The driver of the tanker, a man aged in his 50s, was declared deceased at the scene.

Formal identification is yet to take place and the next of kin is being kept informed of developments and supported by specialist officers.

There were conflicting reports on whether the tanker spilled oil on the road, with National Highways initially reporting oil had been spilled.

However, in an update later in the day, Suffolk police said: "Enquiries continue to establish whether there has been a fuel spill onto the road."

The A12 remains closed in both directions between J32B Capel St Mary and J55 of the A14, the Copdock Interchange.

The roundabout at Copdock Interchange also remains closed with emergency services still on the scene.

The closures are expected to continue for some time and drivers are advised to avoid the area and divert along local roads if travel is necessary.

Officers are appealing for any witnesses to the collision and asking any motorists driving in the area at the time of the incident with a dashcam fitted in their vehicle, to review the footage for any material that may be of assistance.

Anyone with information should contact the Joint Norfolk and Suffolk Serious Collision Investigation Unit quoting CAD 40 of April 21.
