A historic celebration has gone on to help others in the community with more than a £1,000 donated to causes in Ipswich.

Raising donations was a crucial part of the Eid al Fitr prayer that was held on the lawn of Christchurch Mansion on April 10.

In total, the committee raised £1,850, out of which £1,050 was donated to Suffolk Refugee Support, while the rest was given equally to each of the four mosques in Ipswich.

Charity manager at Suffolk Refugee Support Rebecca Crerar said: "We are incredibly grateful for this donation by the group that organised the Eid prayer.

"The money will be used to help vulnerable asylum seekers and refugees that find themselves in Suffolk."

Meanwhile, Councillor Ruman Muhith, who helped the committee organise the prayer said: "The four mosques in Ipswich stand as pillars of faith and community, providing spiritual guidance and a sense of belonging to Muslims in Ipswich and Suffolk.

"Together, they represent the vibrant and inclusive spirit of Islam, welcoming all who seek solace, knowledge, and connection."

The prayer on April 10 was the first time Eid was celebrated in the open air in Ipswich.

Following the success of Eid al Fitr, the committee wishes to bring back the prayer processions for Eid al Adha, which would be celebrated on either June 16 or 17.

Park select committee member Motin Khan said: "We are hoping around 2,000 people will be attending that in the park because the word is now going around.

"We hope people will enjoy getting to the park and praying together with the wider community."

This time the committee will be looking to support the East Anglian Children's Hospice.

The charity delivers life-long support to bereaved and non-bereaved families in Suffolk, through physical therapy, nursing care and practical home help.
