A district council is holding an investigation following the death of a 58-year-old man who died in a motorcycle crash at a Norfolk airfield. 

Martin McConnell died at Tibenham Airfield on July 23 last year at an event during which members of the public attempted to reach speeds of more than 200mph. 

Mr McConnell, a military veteran and Pride of Britain nominee, was treated by paramedics but died at the scene. 

An inquest into his death was opened in August at Norfolk Coroner’s Court, based at County Hall in Norwich.

It heard that he had died because of traumatic injuries to his chest and abdomen.  

The court was also told that he worked as a lorry driver and lived in St Chad's Close in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire. 

At a brief hearing held on April 29, senior coroner for Norfolk, Jacqueline Lake, confirmed that investigations were still on-going. 

She said: “There is a South Norfolk District Council investigation on-going, and I therefore adjourn this inquest for a further review to take place on June 4, 2024.”

Police and the Health and Safety Executive have also launched an investigation into the tragedy. 

Following the incident Terminal Velocity, which organised the speed event at Tibenham Airfield, announced that there would be no more 'runway days'.

Mr McConnell was a prominent fundraiser and campaigner.

He served in the Royal Corps of Transport and in 2015 set up a support group for military veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, called Exforces PTSD. 

Following his death, Mr McConnell's son Jamie led tributes to his father on social media. 

He wrote: "I know for a fact he died smiling and doing what he loved. 

"Rest in peace dad, I will never forget you - the memories we have will live on forever in our hearts."
