More than 80 businesses have pledged to become assistance dog-friendly.

The commitment, made by businesses in Ipswich, is part of a campaign to improve accessibility for people who rely on assistance dogs.

The campaign, Let’s Assist Ipswich, aims to raise awareness and reduce refusals of entry for assistance dog users by encouraging businesses to comply with the Equality Act 2010.

David Fisher, landlord at the Salutation and the Swan & Hedgehog, said: "I'd be very surprised if businesses turn assistance dogs away considering that it's a legal requirement to let them, but surely you want to go out of your way to help people that are less fortunate.

"That's why I think it's fantastic that you're bringing awareness to people in Ipswich through your campaign."

The campaign was launched by a group of nine young people aged 18 to 24 who took part in the summer school programme run by Ipswich MP Jack Abbott.

Mr Abbott said: "I am delighted to see young people in Ipswich raising awareness about such an important issue.

A spokesperson for Let’s Assist Ipswich said: "Our campaign is focused on empowering the Ipswich community to be more vigilant and attentive to the needs of people with assistance dogs and so far it has been received incredibly well.

"We are extremely grateful for the warm receptions shown to us by the Ipswich businesses that have signed up to our pledge that commits to making Ipswich an accessible place where everybody can exercise their independence and enjoy our town."
