Ipswich's MP has been promoted to a new role within the government as the Prime Minister completed a reshuffle of his cabinet.

Jack Abbott said he was "delighted" to have been appointed the Private Parliamentary Secretary to the Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy at the Department for Culture, Media and Sport.

Mr Abbott has long been a supporter of Ipswich's thriving arts and music scene, and was joined by Ms Nandy at a surprise Ed Sheeran gig at The Baths last year.

The MP has also been a key driver for Ipswich to submit a bid for the next City of Culture, which does not require the town to have city status, but will show off the best that town has to offer.

Mr Abbott said: “I am delighted to have been appointed Private Parliamentary Secretary to Lisa Nandy in the Department for Culture, Media and Sport.

“Ipswich is being revived by sport, arts and culture, and I am so proud of what we are hosting here in our town, week-in, week-out.

"Just look at the summer we had, with the hat-trick of Ed Sheeran gigs, the Fabio Wardley fight, and Brighten the Corners, and now we have SPILL Festival and Ipswich Book Festival on the horizon too.

“It is a real privilege to now work on all of this on a national scale, and to have an even greater platform to champion our town.

“I am so grateful to Baroness Smith of Basildon and her wonderful team in the Lords for all their support, guidance and friendship over the past six months.”

Sir Keir Starmer's reshuffle came as Angela Rayner resigned from her positions in the government - which included Housing Secretary and Deputy Prime Minister.

Yvette Cooper moved from the Home Office to the Foreign Office, replacing David Lammy who became Deputy Prime Minister and Justice Secretary, with Shabana Mahmood taking Ms Cooper's place as Home Secretary.
