A new climate hub is set to open in the heart of Ipswich.

Located at 5 Buttermarket, the Ipswich Umbrella will be officially launched on Saturday, February 7, with an opening event from 12pm to 4pm.

Rupert Read, co-director of the Climate Majority Project and one of the founders of Extinction Rebellion, will formally open the hub.

Ipswich Umbrella organisers said: "Let's take action on the climate and nature crisis by building a safer, stronger community.

"Together, we're building a future that works for people and the planet.

"We can't wait to see you there."

The hub will host talks, film screenings, group discussions, creative and educational workshops, energy transition guidance, a Repair Café, a refill station, a 'Library of Things,' and a community noticeboard.

Visitors can also enjoy live music, a display of craftivist textiles, vegetarian refreshments, and opportunities to join working groups and volunteer.

The centre is currently open only when events are taking place, with listings available at linktr.ee/ipswichumbrella.

The project began just a few months ago, inspired by the success of climate hubs in nearby towns such as Woodbridge and Colchester.

After a successful pilot project by the Deben Climate Centre over Easter 2024, demand for a dedicated space in Ipswich became clear.

Support from CHIp and the Suffolk Sustainability Partnership helped secure the empty unit and fund its transformation into a climate hub.

Enthusiasm for the project grew further during a public street stall outside the Buttermarket.

Organisers said: "This place will be more than just a building — it will be a living space where local groups, artists, gardeners, repairers, educators, and change-makers come together to share skills, host workshops, and plan for a fairer, greener future."
