A restaurant in the Waterfront has been removed, prompting questions from Ipswich residents about its future - here's why it is no longer there.

Mariners, based in a boat in Neptune's Quay along Ipswich Waterfront was taken away on Monday morning by tug boats.

The restaurant has been closed since the start of the year while the team took a break.

Now, owner Julien Jourdain, who also owns Bistro on the Quay opposite, has said the boat has been removed and taken to Pin Mill for maintenance work.

It is not known when the boat will return.

Mr Jourdain said: "It all depends on how many repairs need to be done.

"The problem with boats is that you never know what work needs to be done until the boat is taken out of the water, and they can see what they are dealing with."

Therefore, it is not known when the boat will return and reopen for business, but much of the food found in Mariners can currently be found in the Bistro on the Quay.

Dishes include baked camembert served with a baguette, chicken supreme with pan-fried wild mushrooms and Crème Brûlée for dessert

The boat was originally commissioned in 1900 for use by the Belgian state, before finding its home in Ipswich.

Previously serving Italian cuisine under the name Il Punto, a rebrand in 2009 saw the boat adopt the name Mariners with a reimagined seasonal menu focusing on French bistro cuisine.

Mr Jourdain took over the restaurant in 2018.

Elsewhere on the Waterfront, the team behind Lord Nelson have taken over The Waterfront, formerly Waterfront Bistro, after that was closed for some time.
