A nine-year-old Ipswich tennis player has been crowned the UK’s number one after a remarkable run at a national finals event.
Freddie Sutton produced an outstanding performance at the 2026 Lexus National Tour 9U Finals at Bolton Tennis Arena, competing against the top 32 players in the country under the watchful eye of national coaches.
After losing his opening match in a deciding tie-break, Freddie showed impressive resilience to win his next six matches, defeating several higher-ranked opponents along the way.
He capped the weekend by winning the final 4-0, dropping just four points, and was awarded the 'resilient competitor' prize for his attitude and behaviour.
The result completed a rapid rise, with Freddie confirmed as the UK’s number one-ranked 9U player last week.
What stood out most to his coach and father Ollie, was not just the result, but his mindset.
Before the tournament, Freddie, who is sponsored by HEAD UK, said his goal was simply “not to come last”, but after the first day, he told him: “I think I can win this.”
He added: “Seeing that belief grow over the weekend was really special.”
Speaking about his son’s ability, he said: “In terms of pure shot making and natural tennis ability, Freddie is as good as any youngster I’ve worked with at this age.”
Freddie, who trains at David Lloyd and is part of the regional performance programme at Culford, was delighted with his achievement.
He said: “I’m really pleased and I hope I can keep winning.
“I never thought I’d get to number one, but I’m proud and excited to have done it with all my tennis friends.”
Despite his success, his family say the focus remains on keeping the sport enjoyable as he continues his development.
