A man in his 50s was arrested after a police officer was assaulted in Ipswich.

The man was detained on Burrell Road at 11.20am on Saturday, June 6 after an officer was assaulted during an attempted arrest for unrelated matters.

He was taken to Martlesham police investigation centre and has since been released on bail until July 28.

At the time of the incident, a large police presence was seen on the street.

One witness said: "20 plain police and four CID with police blocked the stairs of a house with an unmarked car outside.

I do live nearby, but can't say I've ever felt unsafe, it's just a very rundown part of Ipswich."

Another resident described the scene.

They said: "I got home from work and there were police all over the street.

I couldn't tell you what happened but there was a lot of police."

Officers and police vehicles cleared the area by 3pm.

No details about the incident have been released at this time.
