Plans to stop drinking in public look set to be approved

Plans to extend an order stopping people from drinking alcohol in public look set to be approved by Ipswich Borough Council.

The council is proposing to extend the Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) relating to powers designed to stop people consuming alcohol in certain public places when the executive committee meets next week for a vote on the plans.

Council officers have recommended that the current PSPO be extended by an additional three years which says that no person should be allowed to continue to drink alcohol from an open container after being asked to stop or hand over the container by an appropriate officer.

These include officers from Suffolk Police, including a Police Community Support Officer (PCSO), officers from Ipswich Borough Council, My Local Bobby officers or certain contractors working on behalf of the council.

If the council votes for the plans, a consultation will take place with the relevant parties and the public before the order is extended.

The current PSPO expires on Monday, November 16.
