Tributes have been paid to a former Ipswich School scholar who died after falling into a river last weekend.

Harrison Cole, 25, passed away last Saturday after he reportedly fell into the River Cam with police recovering his body the day after in Cambridge.

A former music scholar at Ipswich School, he went on to perform the famous Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols service – which is broadcast globally every Christmas Eve - for King's College.

Bev Steensma, Director of Music at Ipswich School, said: "We are deeply saddened to hear of the death of Harrison Cole, a former pupil and music scholar at Ipswich School.

"During his time here, he made a lasting impression as an outstanding young musician, playing the organ in chapel services, performing in our Big Band and winning the Ipswich School Young Musician competition in 2017.

"Harrison was an exceptionally gifted musician who will be remembered with great affection and admiration. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and all who knew him at this very sad time."

A Cambridgeshire Police spokesperson said: “We were called to the River Cam at about 9.15am on Sunday with reports of the body of a man in the river near to King’s College.

“The death is not being treated as suspicious and has been passed to the coroner.”

An East of England Ambulance Service NHS Trust spokesman said: “One ambulance, a paramedic car and East Anglian Air Ambulance were sent to Queen’s Road, Cambridge, on Sunday morning following reports of a person in the river.

“Fire and Rescue colleagues assisted in bringing a man ashore but, sadly, despite the best efforts of all involved, the patient had died at the scene.”

King's College Provost Gillian Tett said: "The entire college community has felt this loss keenly, particularly the choir and chapel teams.

"Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones at this sad time”.

Harrison joined Ipswich School in the Sixth Form from 2016 to 2018.

After leaving Ipswich School, Harrison spent a gap year as Organ Scholar at Wells Cathedral before going on to Trinity College, Cambridge, where he was Organ Scholar.

He later served as Assistant Organist at Gonville and Caius College, and most recently as Assisting Organist at King’s College, Cambridge.

Harrison was due to leave King’s this summer and had recently been appointed to assistantships at St Paul’s Knightsbridge and St Michael’s Cornhill in London.
