Plans to build more than 50 new homes on a disused wasteland in Ipswich have been rejected by the council.

Ipswich Borough Council have refused plans to turn the brownfield site at 578 Wherstead Road into 52 flats with space for four commercial units.

The plans - which would have seen Bourne Garden Centre knocked down to make space for the flats - were rejected for being too 'overbearing' for the proposed area.

In the council's decision report they state issues with the plans for being 'overbearing' and an 'unacceptable loss of amenity' while also 'failing to respect local character'.

The proposal hoped to create three blocks - one five-storey and two four - with commercial units beneath.

Previously, neighbours objected to the plans saying: "I strongly object to this planning request due to severe, persistent traffic congestion in the area.

"Current parking provisions are wholly inadequate and will undoubtedly disrupt the local community."

Pleas were made by other residents previously as they asked developers to fix flooding issues that have plagued the community in the past.
