A school is set to remain closed for a second day after a heatwave hit Suffolk.

Cedarewood Primary School in Kesgrave, near Ipswich, shut to students on Wednesday following days of hot weather across the county.

It has been confirmed the school, which is run by headteacher Tina Shute, will remain closed on Thursday and Friday.

It is not the only school in Suffolk to be closed after Great Barton Church of England Primary Academy said it would be shut following "extreme weather conditions."

An amber alert for extreme heat was extended by the Met Office and will be in place until 9pm on Saturday.

The forecaster said although temperatures on Thursday will be slightly cooler, Kesgrave on Friday could reach highs of 37C.

A red heat health alert issued by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) remains in place.

Dr Agostinho Sousa, head of extreme events and health protection at UKHSA, said: "Very hot weather is forecast across large parts of England in the coming days and we are urging health and social care services across the country to ensure they are prepared.

"It is vitally important that people understand the risk posed by high temperatures like these, and take steps to keep themselves and their friends, families and neighbours safe."
