If your budget is squeezed but you still want to make the most of summer in Ipswich, there’s plenty happening that won’t cost you a penny.

From sugary pop-ups on the Cornhill to markets in leafy parks and historic alleyways, these five free events offer an easy way to fill your calendar without rinsing your wallet.

1. Indulge at the Sweet Treat Food Festival

On Saturday, July 25, the Cornhill turns into a sugar-lover’s paradise as the Sweet Treat Food Festival takes over Ipswich town centre for a full day.

Expect stalls piled high with bakes, desserts and sweet snacks from local independents, plus family-friendly workshops and entertainment woven through the market.

Entry is free, so you can wander, browse and only pay for whatever treats actually tempt you.

Humans have gazed up at the moon for millennia — now you can come a little closer to our nearest neighbour this summer at The Hold in Ipswich.

Discover the science and mythology of the moon, relive the historic moments of the 1969 landing, and encounter astonishing objects including real, touchable moon rock in this touring exhibition by Bespoke Scientific.

The exhibition runs until September 19.

3. Graze Your Way Around Christchurch Park Market

On the second Sunday of each month from April to September, Christchurch Park fills with stalls for a free-entry artisan market running 9:30 am–3 pm.

You’ll find local producers, street food, coffee, craft and lifestyle stalls set against the backdrop of one of Ipswich’s prettiest green spaces.

It’s an easy way to turn a casual park stroll into a slow, grazing afternoon without committing to a big-ticket event.

4. Celebrate Culture at One Big Multicultural Festival

On Sunday, August 30, Alexandra Park hosts One Big Multicultural Festival, a free community celebration organised by BSC Multicultural Services with Ipswich Borough Council.

The day combines live music and dance from a wide mix of cultures with food stalls, kids’ activities, traditional sports like Kabaddi and a relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere.

Previous years have drawn thousands of visitors, so expect a lively crowd and plenty of colour without any ticket cost.

5. Shop Small at The Walk’s Local Makers’ Market

The historic alley of The Walk and into the Thoroughfare becomes a showcase for independent creativity on Sunday, August 30, when the Local Makers’ Market lines the street with stalls.

Set among the characterful architecture and indie shops of this corner of town, the market brings together Suffolk makers, vintage sellers and designers for a free-to-browse event aimed at boosting footfall in the town centre.

It’s ideal for a lazy Sunday wander: you can soak up the atmosphere and only spend if something truly catches your eye.
