An appeal has been launched after plans for a 'dominating' 5G tower in Ipswich were rejected by the council after mass objections from residents.

Ipswich Borough Council's planning and development committee voted against the proposal five to four when it met to discuss the plans for the 27 metre tall tower in April.

However, the applicant has launched a fresh bid to receive prior approval from the council after submitting an appeal.

The previously rejected proposals include replacing the existing 15 metre tower at Kiln Close with a new 24 metre tower, with a three metre headframe taking the total height to 27 metres.

54 residents objected to the plans, who feared that the tower would "dominate the skyline" and would cause harm to the residential area.

Councillors on the committee were conflicted as they balanced the need for better mobile phone service in the town with the objections form residents.

In the appeal documents, the applicant stated the tower upgrades were necessary to future proof service in the area as well provide coverage as the 3G service is phased out by mobile phone operators.
