An alcoholic who threatened a man with a knife during a late night confrontation in Ipswich town centre has been jailed for 20 months.

Wayne Taylor was in Upper Brook Street on a pushbike in the early hours of July 18 when he saw the victim who was looking for his sister, Ipswich Crown Court heard.

The victim thought Taylor  was harassing his sister and told him to go away and as they walked away Taylor  started following them, said Peter Gair, prosecuting..

The victim swore at Taylor  and shortly afterwards Taylor had threatened him with a cheese knife.

Police were contacted by a passer-by and Taylor  was arrested shortly afterwards and found in possession of the knife.

Taylor, 36, of no fixed address, admitted threatening with a blade and breaching a two year prison sentence suspended for two years imposed at Ipswich Crown Court in February for offences of robbery at a Co-op store and burglary at the Range.

Judge Samantha Leigh jailed Taylor for ten months for the  threatening with a knife offence and imposed ten months of the suspended prison sentence to run consecutively.

Isobel Ascherson for Taylor  said her client was an alcoholic and needed support to stop him drinking and reoffending.
