A RECORD breaking car which has clocked up more than two million miles was catching admiring glances at the weekend.

The car, a 1966 Volvo, was in Suffolk as its owner visited friends on the way to a celebration of the firm's 75 years in business after the car was shipped in to England.

When owner Irvin Gordon, from the United States, visited Haughley, villagers cast admiring glances as they saw the car parked near The Counting House restaurant in the centre of the community.

The car is a Guinness world record holder for its mileage, which currently stands at 2,280,250.

Mr Gordon, a 60-year-old retired teacher who bought the car new in 1966, said: "This is my pride and joy. When I bought her she cost me a year's salary and that was tough.

"But I enjoyed driving it and had to have it. The car is pretty indestructible, designed as a grand touring car made to run at high speed without showing signs of wear and tear.''
