The A14 was blocked near Ipswich for nearly two hours after a four-vehicle accident between Wherstead and Copdock.
The westbound carriageway was closed from about 9.30pm while police investigated and cleared the accident. No one is believed to have been seriously injured.
One person was being questioned after the accident after suspicions that one of the vehicles may have been stolen – but the police and Highways England were able to reopen the road by 11.15pm.
Druing the closure traffic was diverted from the Wherstead junction through Ipswich or to Colchester through Manningtree rather than down the A12.
The spokesman said traffic was relatively light on a Sunday evening so there was not major congestion.
