A FIVE car crash which closed the A140 this morning has been cleared and the road reopened.

The accident happened on the northbound carriageway in Brockford Green, near Mendlesham at about 9.30am and has been described by a police spokeswoman as a “shunt.”

Police officers, the fire service and four ambulance crews are on the scene and the road has been closed in both directions since 10am while the emergency services wait for recovery crews to turn up.

The vehicles involved in the collision were a white Ford Fiesta, a white Renault van, a blue VW Passat, a black Honda Civic and the fifth vehicle type is not known.

The male driver of the Ford Fiesta is being cut out of his vehicle by firefighters and is believed to have sustained injuries, though the extent of his injuries are not yet known, according to the police spokeswoman.

The driver of the VW Passat has been taken to hospital for further treatment. A spokeswoman for the East of England Ambulance trust said the man was conscious and breathing at the scene but was complaining of head pain and so has been taken to Ipswich Hospital.

Police officers reopened the road at about 11.30am but a backlog of traffic caused further delays for a period of time.
