VANDALS were today being hunted after they set fire to a marquee which had been used for a fundraising jazz night.

Around 200 people had turned out for the music event on Chelmondiston village playing field on Saturday night, which culminated in a fireworks display.

The night was staged to raise cash for the Pin Mill and Chelmondiston Community Council, which supports village-based projects including the playgroup.

However, overnight, the marquee was torched, wiping out any profit.

Organiser Alan Storey said: “What joy can anyone get from such a wretched act?

“Because we didn't finish until 10pm and it was pitch black, we left the marquee until the morning.

“This couldn't have been an accident because one of the marquee legs had been deliberately bent.

“It makes you feel pretty sick.”

Mr Storey, of Woodlands, Chelmondiston, urged anyone with information on the arson to call Capel St Mary Police on 01473 613500.
