ARMED robbers brandishing a handgun are being hunted today after an attempted raid at a fast food restaurant in Felixstowe.

Two people, believed to be a man and a woman, struck at McDonald's in Walton Avenue at around 9.45pm yesterday.

As the robbers approached the counter, one of them pointed what appeared to be a black handgun at the 20-year-old man who was serving, and demanded cash. The second offender then repeated this demand.

Something then fell from end of the gun and the first offender picked it up and walked away from the counter towards the door.

By this time the counter assistant had shut himself in an office and the second offender tried to gain access. When this failed they left the premises.

Nothing was stolen and no one was hurt, although staff have been left shaken by the incident. The gun is not thought to have been discharged.

The first offender is described as a white male. He wore a dark hat, a check scarf partially covering his face, a black top, black gloves, dark coloured trousers/ jeans and dirty training shoes.

The second offender is believed to be a white female. She wore a dark coloured hat with a white motif on the front, a purple coloured scarf partially covering her face, a light coloured top, black gloves, dark coloured trousers/ jeans and white trainers.

A spokesman for McDonald's said: "Obviously we hope the people responsible for this are caught as soon as possible.

"We have handed over the CCTV tape to the police and are working closely with them.

"There were not many staff on duty when the incident happened and everybody is fine and nobody was hurt but they were left shaken by what happened."

Today the restaurant was open for business as normal and there was no sign of the drama which unfolded last night.

Police are asking anyone who may have been in the area at the time who may have seen anyone matching these descriptions, or anyone with information about the attempted robbery, to contact Felixstowe CID on 01473 613500.
