Arron Rose, from Ringshall, and his brother Jamie, from Ipswich, set off on their daunting challenge on Tuesday.

The race, called Benidorm Bangers, challenges participants to nurse an old car, worth £500 or less, along a gruelling 1,300-mile route to the Spanish holiday spot.

On the trip, the brothers will take in the sights of Rouen, Paris and Limoges in France as well as Barcelona and Valencia in Spain – and are sure to turn a few heads as their iconic vehicle rolls by.

Arron said he took part in the challenge last year in a Chrysler PT Cruiser – but almost came a cropper when they ran out of petrol in the Pyrenees.

“That was a better car to be honest,” he said.

“When we bought the three-wheeler it was blue so its been through a full colour change.

“We have been tinkering with it to make sure it keeps cool and is all packed and ready for Europe.

“The thing with the car is we will be lucky to break 55mph – it will be a fair old slog.

“The three-wheeler doesn’t have air conditioning either so that won’t be nice.

“Keeping the car’s engine cool will be the real challenge.

“It’s a proper endurance race.

“It was good fun last year, we made it all the way there.

“But at one point we were two-and-a-half miles up the Pyrenees and the petrol light came on.

“At that time it was thick fog so it was quite intimidating.

“The temperatures on the journey went as high as 28C and the same day could go down to -1C.”

The brave pair are raising cash for Barking Pre-school, a registered charity near Needham Market.

“My little girl Lilah goes to the pre-school and my son Freddy, who is four now, he went there too,” said Arron. “I am on the fundraising committee and we are just trying to keep the school’s head above water.

“They have an issue with funding at the moment and have to plug the gap - they need to raise £1,500 each term just to break even.”
