The incident happened at the Londis store, in Oxford Street, Exning at 10.15pm on Friday and comes a day after a raid on a Co-op store, in Mile End Colchester.

In Exning the men threatened a male member of staff and demanded to have the key to the safe but during the course of the raid the man managed to escape the shop and get help.

The offenders left the scene with a quantity of cash from the till and were seen getting into a red Nissan sports car.

The raid in Colchester happened at 8.45pm and although no money was taken a female cash assistant was slapped in the face.

The man with the axe, from the Londis raid, is described as white and was wearing a thorn-coloured coat and a light balaclava.

The man with a crowbar was wearing a green coat and blue jeans and a third man was wearing a black puffa jacket and black balaclava.

Police are interested to hear from a man who went into the store minutes before the raid to ask for a free newspaper.

He was wearing black clothes and white trainers and he, or anyone else with information to the robbery should call Newmarket CID on 01437 613500.
