MILLIONS of pounds could be spent on making Suffolk's notorious Haughley bends safer if a housing development near Stowmarket goes ahead, it can be revealed today

George Wimpey UK Ltd, which wants to build between 750 and 1,000 homes in Onehouse, said the safety work could come as part of the package.

Tom Curtin, a spokesman for the company, said: "One of the major potential benefits of this scheme will be improving the A14 at the Haughley bends."

He said an additional exit could also be linked to the A14 to serve the development.

The Highways Agency revealed that construction of a new route for the road is already planned to begin in 2006.
