POLICE are appealing for the public's help in finding a racing car stolen from Ipswich which could be crucial in catching the men responsible for a failed ram raid.

Suffolk Police are leading the hunt for the distinctive red and black Ford Escort after the Ford Cargo truck carrying it was stolen and used in the April 14 raid.

The truck was stolen from Elton Park Industrial Estate in Hadleigh Road between 6pm on April 13 and sometime before 3.35am on April 14.

Essex Police believe the raiders, who may have numbered more than two, used the truck to ram the Ardleigh Service Station building in Colchester Road, Ardleigh, at about 3.35am that morning.

The men are thought to have used some sort of oxygen-based cutting equipment on the cash machine but the robbery attempt failed and they left the machine behind without accessing the cash.

The truck was later found in Ardleigh but the Escort, which is used for grass racing, has not been located.

Anyone who knows the whereabouts of the car or has any information about the ram raid should call DS Vicki Williams at Suffolk Police on 01473 613500 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
