GUY Fawkes is set to go with a bang at Felixstowe this year - with the resort set to stage its biggest firework display for decades.

There is a chance for some lucky children, too, to push the plunger to start the 20-minute, £3,000 display by making the best guy.

It will be the first time since the 1980s, when the Guy Carnival used to be held on Langer Park, there has been a town-wide event and organisers hope it will become an annual celebration.

The Firework Spectacular, which is being sponsored by the Evening Star and other businesses from the area, is being put on by Felixstowe and Walton United Football Club.

It will take place on Sunday November 2 at their Dellwood Avenue ground in aid of the football club and Cancer Research UK.

Club commercial officer Chris Daynes said: “It is many years since the town had a big display and we decided it was time to get it started again.

“It is being billed as the biggest display Felixstowe has ever seen, but we plan to build on it in future years and make it ever bigger.”

There have been some teething problems this year.

It had been planned to have live music from the Abbababes and a bar, but both had to be cancelled because the ground licence said they could only be provided for club members and not the public.

Suffolk Coastal could not help because there would have to be public consultation by law to change the licence conditions and this would not expire until after the display.

“It is still going to be great evening with lots going on for people to enjoy plus a fantastic fireworks display,” said Mr Daynes.

“We are holding a best guy competition and children should bring them along by 5.30pm on the day to be judged - the winner will get to press the plunger to start the fireworks.”

Gates open at 5pm, the display starts at 7pm. The event also features children's fairground rides, sideshows, hot food and other attractions.

Advance tickets are adults £4, children under 16 £2 from the football club on match days and from You're Having A Laugh, Hamilton Road, and Walton Post Office, Walton High Street, during shop hours. On the gate they will be adults £5, children £3.
