LIGHTED newspaper caused more than £100 damage to an Ipswich business in the early hours of today, after it was pushed through a letterbox.

Firefighters were called to attend to the fire at Burostat Ltd, manufacturers and suppliers of advertising items, in Cavendish Street at 1.20am today.

The fire caused limited damage, but did partially destroy a large doormat in the reception area, thought to be valued at £100.

Trevor Hearn, Site Manager at Burostat said the fire was contained to just the reception area.

He said: "We were lucky, though, this fire could have been a lot worse. We could have lost the whole building.

"But it's just really inconvenient – it's not the sort of thing you need - we'll have to get a new doormat and maybe a new door, although the door may just be smoke damaged.

"Nobody was here last night and nobody saw anything. The first thing I head was this morning when I turned up for work at 8.15am.

"We've had a bit of trouble here lately – only recently someone drove around the yard in a car and smashed a wall. They just dumped it here and we had to rebuild the wall.

"We've also had broken windows and most of the places down here have had some kind of trouble.

A spokesman for the fire brigade said the fire was being treated as suspicious and confirmed the cause of the fire was lighted newspaper.

The fire at Burostat comes just over 48 hours after a fire at Holden Timber, in nearby Duke Street.

More than 40 wooden pallets were destroyed in that fire, but the two fires are not being linked at this stage.
