MORE than two dozen drivers accused of using a ring road on the outskirts of Ipswich town centre as a racetrack are due to appear in court this month.

One of those scheduled to appear before Ipswich magistrates was allegedly caught speeding six times in just a few hours.

Boy racers have plagued the Grafton Way and Commercial Road area over the past few years will allegations of speeding drivers competing against each other during the evening.

Complaints from businesses in the area have been rife and there have been many attempts by police to ensure the problem is curbed.

It is not unknown for some drivers to reach speeds of in excess of 50mph in the 30mph zone.

With safety fears paramount at the notorious circuit around the Royal Mail sorting office and Princes Street fire station a speeding crackdown ensued in a bid to catch those responsible.

In total 26 people have now been summonsed to appear at South East Suffolk Magistrates Court, where they will be formally charged with driving offences.

A spokeswoman for Ipswich police said: "Following an operation when speed checks were carried out in Grafton Way, 25 people have been summonsed to court for speeding on Wednesday, March 31."

In addition to the 25 drivers who are due to appear at court to face charges of speeding, another motorist is scheduled to attend on a more serious charge.

The man, who has not been named, has been summonsed to appear on an offence of dangerous driving.

The allegation also relates to an incident in the same area on the evening of the crackdown.
