BOY racers who drove carelessly in a notorious area of Ipswich have been sentenced at court.

In two separate cases at South East Suffolk Magistrates Court, two men admitted driving carelessly in the Princes Street/Commercial Road area of town.

Kelvin Lummis, of Yaxley Road, Mellis, near Eye, and Timothy Sangster, of Wallers Grove, Ipswich, both pleaded guilty to the charge of careless or inconsiderate driving.

Magistrates heard that Lummis, a 20-year-old postman, was spotted driving a Rover at high speeds at 8.40pm on September 24.

David Taylor, prosecuting, told the court Lummis accelerated away from traffic lights on Chancery Road and quickly reached speeds of 40mph. He added that the incident was witnessed by a police officer.

Lummis, representing himself, said: "I couldn't see any smoke coming off my tyres and I felt in control of my car at all times."

He was fined £120 and ordered to pay £55 costs. His licence was also endorsed with three penalty points.

Sangster, 23, was spotted driving above the legal speed by police in Commercial Road on September 19.

Mr Taylor said: "He was driving at a speed of 47mph over a distance of 250 metres and then broke sharply as he came to the junction with Princes Street."

Sangster, representing himself, told the court he had been driving for five years and had never been stopped by police. He was also fined £120 and ordered to pay £55 costs. His licence was also endorsed with three penalty points.

n Last summer we received a complaint about "boy racers" speeding in town. Our photographers captured some of the high-speed antics and a story was featured in the Evening Star.
