Wearing wigs to help children with cancer

Staff and customers at a bowling alley will be donning a variety of wacky wigs this week to raise money for charity.

Bears Boutique Bowling has signed up to take part in CLIC Sargent’s Wig Wednesday which aims to show support for young people who have cancer.

Many children undergoing treatment for the condition lose their hair, which can be daunting and upsetting.

Michelle Cornish’s five-year-old son Jamie is currently being treated for acute lymphoblastic leukaemia.

She said: “It really upset Jamie when he was first confronted with losing his hair; he was really self-conscious. Wig Wednesday is a great campaign which gets everybody together having some fun with wigs while supporting children and young people with cancer.”

And Bears will be doing just that by inviting customers to turn up in wigs this Wednesday and donate to CLIC Sargent, as well as offering free bowling from noon.

Owner Charles Manning said: “We’re really excited to show off some fabulous wigs and raise as much money as possible for CLIC Sargent.”

As well as collecting donations Bears will be hosting a wig bowling tournament the same evening.

Entry into the competition is £10 with all proceeds going to CLIC Sargent.

The charity’s fundraising manager Daisy Turner said: “We’re so pleased Bears Boutique Bowling will be getting their wigs on to take part in this year’s Wig Wednesday.

“Every day 10 children and young people hear the devastating news they have cancer and CLIC Sargent is here to provide vital support from diagnosis onwards.

“Wig Wednesday is a great opportunity for schools, businesses, universities and communities to raise money and support children and young people with cancer.”
