ELEVEN candidates have been put forward to fight for the three seats previously held by disgraced councillor Ben Redsell.

Independent Mr Redsell resigned his seats on Suffolk Coastal District Council, Woodbridge Town Council and Suffolk County Council in June after being sentenced to a three-year community supervision order at Norwich Crown Court.

He had admitted sexually assaulting a 19-year-old woman, seven counts of making indecent pictures of children and three counts of possessing indecent pictures of children.

Mr Redsell won the county seat in 2005 and was elected to the town and district in 2007, sitting each time as a Conservative party member.

By-elections for the seats will be held on September 18.

A number of well-known names in the riverside town are in the frame, including former district council chairman Roy Burgon, former district councillor Nigel Barratt and former Woodbridge mayor Michael Weaver.

Whoever is elected to take on the Woodbridge Riverside District Ward is due to be on the district council until May 2011, which is the same period for the Woodbridge Riverside parish seat. The Woodbridge County Division seat is next due to be contested in May 2009.
