A LAMPPOST has been flattened by a car in Ipswich today.

The street light in Valley Road, near the junction with Westwood Avenue, was hit by a motorist around 7.25am, sending it crashing to the ground.

As a result the road was partially blocked but traffic was still able to pass in both directions.

The driver, a man in his twenties, was taken to Ipswich Hospital to be checked over but it is not thought that he was seriously injured.

However his car, a blue Renault Clio, was destroyed, according to Paul Mears of CATS recovery.

Mr Mears said: “It's not particularly difficult to knock over a lamppost and not that unusual either.

“They are designed to fall over so the collision doesn't cause as much damage to the person.

“I once went to one accident where the car had knocked over a lamppost and then slid down the bank on the lamppost!

“It is fairly common for people to hit obstacles on the road.”

Mr Mears said the car would be removed once electricians were certain the power supply to the street light had been disconnected.
