A SUFFOLK charity is appealing for help today after thieves stole a lawn mower.

The Suffolk Owl Sanctuary at Stonham Barns, near Stowmarket, which is home to the beautiful siblings of Fetlar the owl, was broken into last night.

Head Warden Julie Finnis said: "They have stolen a lawn mower which is a vital piece of our equipment.

"We will have to replace it immediately to keep the sanctuary looking good for visitors."

Mrs Finnis appealed for help from the public.

"We are borrowing one at the moment but we would be very grateful for any help. It cost us about £200 of hard-earned donations. As a charity we have to watch every penny.

"The shed was securely padlocked and they also broke in through the main gate.

"I think it is despicable that anyone can steal from a charity."

Mrs Finnis said police were investigating the break in.

She added: "We think it must have happened between 6pm and 8pm last night. There is a suspicion that they were disturbed as they could have taken more."

Mrs Finnis said the birds at the sanctuary were not disturbed by the theft.

Police are appealing for witnesses. Anyone with any information should contact 01284 774100 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111. Anyone wishing to help with replacing the mower should contact the sanctuary on 01449 711425.
