SUFFOLK'S crime reduction officer has a new role as the new Woodbridge police commander.

Inspector Ian Farthing, who is married with a son, lives in the Woodbridge area and, as well as being in charge of policing in the town, will also cover the area from Witnesham and Otley to Orford and Bawdsey, as well as Wickham Market, Kesgrave and Martlesham.

He started his career as a police cadet before becoming a constable at Beccles in 1981. He has also worked in CID at Lowestoft, as sector commander for east Ipswich, and as a duty inspector in the force's control room before taking on the role of crime reduction officer.

His career has seen him deal with all sorts of crime but he said he particularly enjoyed the community and partnership work in his most recent role and is looking forward to continuing this in Woodbridge.

His interests include watching sports - primarily football - and local history.
