The policing team looking after south-west Ipswich has been without a local base for more than three months.

The South West Ipswich Safer Neighbourhood team moved out of its hub in Birkfield Drive in June and has since been working from Suffolk Constabulary’s home, Landmark House, in the north-west of the town.

Nadia Cenci, Ipswich borough councillor for the Stoke Park ward, said she was “very concerned” and “disappointed” by the delay in action.

Crime in the area has not noticeably risen since the move, but Ms Cenci said she feared there could be a rise if the police presence did not return soon.

“There’s probably about the same amount [of crime], but we shouldn’t be complacent since they are not in the area and showing themselves as much and that’s when it can escalate,” Ms Cenci added.

Suffolk’s police and crime commissioner, Tim Passmore, who is responsible for the constabulary’s estate, said the team was providing the same level of service to the communities in the south-west as it did from its previous base in the grounds of Chantry Academy, formerly Suffolk New Academy and Chantry High School.

He added: “We are still looking at alternative options and, once decided, I will report back with fuller detail.”
