COASTGUARDS were alerted after a fishing boat came across an old parachute mine off the coast of Essex.
A Wivenhoe-based fishing vessel called Thames Coastguard at 1.10am todayas the crew believed they had trawled up a Second World War parachute mine while undertaking fishing operations in the area, about two and a half miles south west of Colne Point.
The Southern Diving Unit and marine police went to the scene, and a one mile exclusion zone was set up for all vessels.
The device was completely destroyed after a controlled explosion was carried out.
