WOODBRIDGE Police are soon to start their two-week Lights Save Lives campaign – in a bid to reduce the number of people who ride their cycles without lights.
The campaign has three main aims – to prevent serious accidents to cyclists during the hours of darkness, to educate the public in cycle safety and to catch those committing cycle-related offences.
Work on the campaign has already got underway with letters being sent to newsagents and schools to target young cyclists who may be out on their bikes during dark mornings and evenings.
The letters urge them to talk to youngsters about the dangers of not having lights on their bikes and asks all cyclists to check their front and rear lights work effectively. Police also advocate the use of reflectors and fluorescent clothing to increase visibility.
As an added incentive to ensuring safety, those with lights on their bike will be entered into a free draw for a brand new Orbea cycle with an aluminium frame, 24 speed gears and quick release alloy wheels, worth over £300.
The campaign begins on January 21, 2002.
