A SPEEDWAY rider who killed an oncoming motorist during a “moment of madness” on the road has been jailed for three years.
Former Mildenhall Fen Tiger ace James Purchase, 19, was found guilty of causing death by dangerous driving by a jury at Cambridge Crown Court yesterday.
Purchase, of Nightingale Close, Mildenhall, killed 43-year-old father-of-three Stephen Gill after an overtaking manoeuvre on the A10 near Littleport last August.
The court had heard how Purchase decided to overtake a slower-moving car on a dangerous bend and collided head-on with Mr Gill's car.
Purchase was returning from a race at King's Lynn with his friend Kevin Bradfield at the time of the crash. Mr Bradfield broke both his legs in the crash.
Giving evidence, Purchase, who passed his driving test just 14 months before the crash, told how he had looked for oncoming cars and had seen nothing before pulling out onto the other side of the road.
