POLICE today released descriptions of two pairs of suspects wanted over incidents in which doorstep conmen tricked their way into homes.

In the past ten days there have been a series of distraction burglaries across the county – six of them in Felixstowe and Woodbridge – though detectives do not know if the mean thieves are part of the same gang.

The conmen prey on elderly residents and usually persuade the owners to let them in by claiming they are from the "water board", even though this has not existed for many years, and use scare tactics by saying it is an emergency.

Two more incidents took place on Saturday – as reported in later editions of last night's Evening Star – in Felixstowe and Woodbridge.

An Felixstowe couple in their 80s living in the Golf Road area of the resort were conned out of cash by two men claiming to be from the "water board". The incident took place between 11.45am and 12.15pm.

Then a pair of men using exactly the same method tricked their way into the home of an 82-year-old Woodbridge woman at about 1.30pm. She became suspicious and both men left, and nothing was stolen.

Police said one of the men at Felixstowe was white, 25 to 30 years old, 5ft 8in tall, of stocky build with short cropped fair hair.

The second was around 25, about 5ft 6in tall, of slim build, with short cropped black hair and a sallow complexion. Both wore white long-sleeved shirts and dark trousers.

At Woodbridge, one man was white, around 16 to 20 years old, about 5ft 6in with short mid-brown hair, and was wearing a white short and navy trousers. The other was older, 25 to 30, about 5ft 10 in, with very short light brown hair and a plump face. He was wearing a light-coloured shirt.

Police have also released an e-fit of a man they wish to speak to who tricked his way into the home of a 91-year-old woman in Felixstowe's Langer Road area on may 19 and stole cash. The victim helped compile the image.

He is white, 28 to 35, shorter than 5ft 8in, of thin build, with light-brown hair and sharp features, and thought to have a marked accent. He was wearing a maroon long-sleeve top.

Police are also trying to trace a second man of similar age, 5ft 8in tall, of broad build with short dark hair. He was wearing a blue jacket and blue trousers.

Officers are also investigating three incidents in the Walton area on May 23 when women aged 75 and 81, and a man of 92, were targeted.

Anyone with information should contact Woodbridge CID on 01473 613500.

Police have reminded residents never to let anyone into their homes without checking the identity of the caller first. They should also take the number of the vehicle of any caller, and ring 999 if they fear the caller is bogus.
