Drivers experienced long delays in and out of Ipswich this evening while safety checks were made to the railway bridge in Wherstead Road.
There were long tailbacks in both directions between the Wherstead Interchange and the Hawes Street junction, with some drivers reporting they had been stuck for more than an hour.
A Suffolk Highways worker at the scene said safety checks were scheduled to be made to the bridge between 4.30pm and 6.30pm.
Traffic was bad while the work was carried out, but a traffic light system was in place, he added.
They left the area at approximately 7pm, and the road is now clear.
