AN angry motorist is today without her only means of transport after a pothole wrecked two of the wheels on her car.

Grittel Brown wants the council to pay for the damage caused by the hole she drove over in Tuddenham Road, Ipswich.

The 46-year-old, from Rendlesham, was on her way to play bingo on Wednesday evening when she encountered the gap in the road, outside Greshams Sports and Social Club.

Mrs Brown's journey came to an abrupt halt as her car broke down and she was shocked to find the pothole had caused both passenger side wheels to buckle. She said: “All of a sudden I heard this almighty thud. I managed to pull into the social club car park and stayed there until a tow truck arrived.”

Mrs Brown, who doesn't work because of back problems and receives incapacity benefit, claims she can't afford to pay the garage for the 400 worth of repairs to her car. She said: “If this is what happens on the roads I want the council to pay for the damage. Not only will I lose money, I will also lose my four year no claims bonus with my insurance company.”

The garage at which Mrs Brown's car is being repaired reported two other enquiries made by people who had driven over the same pothole on Wednesday.

An Ipswich Borough Council spokesman said: “We can confirm that we have received a complaint from Mrs Brown about potholes on Tuddenham Road and we have carried out emergency remedial repairs.”
